ORIGIN

From a Lancet report to a manufactured instrument.

The Heidelberg capsule began as a published method for measuring gastric function, not as a product. It was refined into a manufactured instrument over the decades that followed, and it has stayed in clinical and research use the entire time, a rare span for any diagnostic device.

Connell and Waters report radiotelemetric intragastric pH measurement in The Lancet.

University of Heidelberg

An academic origin.

The telemetry capsule develops from European physiological research, lending the system its name.

Miniaturization

Advances in radiotelemetry shrink the transmitter to a capsule that can be swallowed and calibrated.

Carroll Hayward establishes United States manufacturing and distribution of the system.
